We are officially halfway through the NHL season and rapidly approaching the trade deadline. The fantasy hockey waiver wire is running thin, but these next few weeks could make or break your league. The big news of the week is that Jack Eichel will require surgery, which will keep him out for at least four weeks. We also have a coaching change for the Islanders as Patrick Roy takes over. Roy had a successful coaching stint with Colorado before abruptly quitting, citing differences with General Manager Joe Sakic over personnel decisions. He seems like a great fit for the Isles, who have a very talented roster that needs a spark. We will keep an eye on the Islanders and be ready to grab anyone who starts to pop in the new system.

The big news this week is injuries to stars Connor Bedard and Jack Hughes. Both look to be long-term, but both players are worth holding on to your roster. Additionally, the Toronto Maple Leafs have signed William Nylander to a massive eight-year, $92 million contract. This is interesting to watch as we head to the trade deadline and cap space becoming an issue for Toronto. There is also word that the Calgary Flames are shopping Defenseman Noah Hanifin around, hoping to trade him before he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer. This is a situation to watch, because if he is traded to a rebuilding team, we could see his production crash through the floor.

Happy New Year! We are at the halfway point of the season, and things are starting to fall into place. This is the time of the fantasy season when we need to start piling up some wins, and one of my favorite strategies is to work the waiver wire with teams who play the most each week.
